The Trail Bridge Program is focused on connecting remote communities to basic social services by allowing them to safely cross rivers and valleys without having to walk for hours. It will also allow greater access to economic resources and opportunities reducing poverty. It is thought that 2.2 million people, of which 50% will be from disadvantaged groups will benefit from safe and improved river crossing facilities. The target is to build 2,200 bridges across all 75 districts of Nepal with REMREC being active in 9 of these districts. Once completed these bridges will lead to an increase by up to 15% in school attendance and the number of people able to visit health posts, as well as creating 5.5 million person-days’ worth of jobs. A final benefit of these bridges is a possible increase in tourism, boosting the economy. REMREC is involved in planning, implementing and maintaining the bridges.
